Concept Design in SketchUp

Concept Design in SketchUp introduces learners to the fundamentals of 3D modeling and visualization for early-stage real estate and architectural design. Through a hands-on, project-based approach, students will learn how to translate development concepts into simple yet accurate massing models, floor layouts, and visual presentations. The course emphasizes efficiency in exploring spatial relationships, building forms, and site context—key steps in preliminary design and feasibility studies. By the end of the course, learners will have created a professional concept model suitable for communicating ideas to clients, investors, or planning authorities.

Course description

Welcome to the Concept Design in SketchUp Course.

In this course, learners will use SketchUp to visualize and refine early-stage project ideas—from site layout to basic building massing and spatial organization. Key tools and features covered include the Push/Pull and Follow Me tools for shaping geometry, Groups and Components for efficient model organization, Tags (Layers) and Scenes for managing views and presentations, and the Materials and Styles panels for adding realistic textures and visual appeal. Learners will also explore geolocation, section planes, and shadow analysis to evaluate design concepts in context, preparing them to present compelling 3D visuals and quick feasibility layouts for real-world real estate projects.

Software Access

The Practice session requires you to set up a free demo account for the SketchUp software. A guide on how to do this is provided in the Practice window with step-by-step instructions.

Pre-requisite

To get the most out of this course, learners should have a basic understanding of real estate development or architectural design concepts, including floor layouts, building forms, and site planning. No prior 3D modeling experience is required, but familiarity with basic computer operations and digital drawing tools is helpful. For learners who want to accelerate their 3D modeling, having a 2D floor plan or site plan—exported from software like ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, or Revit—can be useful to trace and build accurate 3D models more efficiently. However, the course is designed so that students can create 3D models directly in SketchUp from scratch, making it accessible even without prior CAD drawings.
